 Senior (Adult) Lacrosse

Until June 2002, Aberdeen had one lacrosse club – Aberdeen University .  This is a mixed and ladies lacrosse club that participates in the Scottish Lacrosse League as a mixed team and the Scottish Universities League as a ladies team.  The Aberdeen University team is only open to students of Aberdeen University and graduates of the University.

During the summer of 2002, Rebecca Davidson (now Lovie) joined forces with Philip Smart and decided to start another team in Aberdeen .  This would be a non-university team and would be open to anybody that was not eligible to play for the Aberdeen University Club.

After much hard work, Aberdeen Lacrosse Club was born.  They successfully applied for a grant from Awards for All to purchase equipment and began training through the summer at Duthie Park .

Since that summer in Duthie Park , Aberdeen Lacrosse Club has sampled a few training venues and has played a few matches in the mixed Scottish Lacrosse League.  In the 2003/04 season they were included in the fixture list, but only for friendly matches.  In the 2004/05 they were finally included in the full fixture list.

Simultaneously to all this mixed lacrosse going on, Philip was trying to get a men’s lacrosse team going.  This was born in the shape of Granite City Gladiators, under the umbrella of Aberdeen Lacrosse Club.  Their first competitive season was 2003/04 and they participate in the Anglo-Scots Lacrosse League, which included teams from Scotland and the North of England.

The mixed section of Aberdeen Lacrosse Club temporarily folded as there was a lack of interest and commitment from players.  On a happier note though, Granite City Gladiators has continued and the mixed section of Aberdeen Lacrosse Club reformed in May 2008 ready to participate in matches during the 2008/09 season.

School Lacrosse – Secondary

Of the twelve secondary schools run by Aberdeen City Council there are five that have sampled some lacrosse (pop and field) over the last few years – Aberdeen Grammar School, Bankhead Academy, Harlaw Academy, Hazlehead Academy and Oldmachar Academy.

Of the independently run schools in Aberdeen, three have offered the opportunity to try lacrosse – Albyn School, Robert Gordon’s College and St Margaret’s School.

Unfortunately there is not a strong enough base in any of the above schools to develop a schools’ lacrosse league although this is a target for the future.  Aberdeen Lacrosse Club offers coaching for secondary pupils and will be entering teams into competions this year.

School Lacrosse – Primary

Twenty two  Aberdeen City Council primary schools have sampled some pop lacrosse over the last few years – Airyhall, Ashley Road, Broomhill, Causewayend, Charleston, Craighill, Danestone, Dyce, Fernielea, Forehill, Glashieburn, Hanover Street, Hazlehead, Kingswells, Kirkhill, Kittybrewster, Loirston, Middleton Park, Mile End, Newhills,  Sunnybank and Woodside.  Seven schools in Aberdeenshire have also tried – Banchory Devenick, Daviot, Fishermoss, Monymusk, Netherley, Newmachar and Towie.

The Aberdeen Pop Lacrosse Tournament first ran in March 2004.  This is now an annual event held at the Beach Leisure Centre in Aberdeen.  The winning teams from the Under 11 and Open sections automatically qualify for the National Pop Lacrosse Tournament which is usually held in April/May.
